Thus, in More Than a Woman — the sequel to the mega-selling book How to Be a Woman — Moran, now 45, takes a second look at womanhood, this time from the vantage point of middle age.
Part memoir, part manifesto, it tackles such thorny issues as anal sex, smear tests, hangovers, teenagers, ageing parents, careers, the tyranny of the to-do list, big bums and the moment when your entire wardrobe seems to turn against you.
While the subjects can feel a little shoehorned at times, it allows Moran to provide snapshots of her daily routine and, as is her trademark, use them to make broader points about the general state of things. Elsewhere, meandering anecdotes are replaced by no-nonsense commands.
She also reserves the right to change her mind. For instance, the chapter on tending to vulnerable parents is sympathetic but slim, largely because her own parents are in good health. Moran is at her best when writing about what she knows. Thus, she hails the friendships that have stretched over decades, her sudden appreciation of gardens, dog ownership and, yes, her ageing body. Clearly, Moran understands this.
The confusion, followed by alarm, followed by abject devastation felt by Moran and her husband is powerfully articulated, and sits in stark contrast to the larkiness elsewhere. Happiness comes again, eventually … Just by staying alive.

More Bee Gees lyrics.Nine years on and the feminism she had to advocate for has become thoroughly, totally mainstream, while perky books by clever journalists about every conceivable aspect of being a woman have proliferated in the ground Moran tilled.
But the OG is back, with a book cheerfully reflecting on what it means to be a woman in middle age. Bring stuff at the top down! When you see a woman reading this book, you will likely also see her nodding furiously. Sign me up. Much of the rest of the book takes a more comically exasperated look at the faffy demands of fortysomething life: the never-ending to do list, the furious multitasking.
The chapters on parenting are the ones that rubble you. It brings weight to an otherwise effervescent book. Occasionally, she goes on to autopilot: certain phrases or images are reached for repeatedly time explodes, middle-aged women are call centres for people exploding, young women are messy explosions.
But these are easy to forgive, like hearing an old friend lean on the same old joke or riff — you still admire their delivery, you still admire them. Moran proves herself, once more, a sage guide in the joys, as well as the difficult bits, of being a woman — of being a partner, mother, friend and feminist.
